Template information:
Many consider the Supermarine Spitfire to be the most famous fighter aircraft that has ever taken off into the clouds, although some may argue that something so beautiful cannot be thought of as a weapon of war. It was a much more complicated aircraft than the Hawker Hurricane, which was its predecessor in the RAF, and by the time the first pieces fell into Squadron No. 19 in Duxford in the summer of 1938, the Spitfire was the pinnacle of aeronautical engineering. At that time, the clouds foreshadowing the arrival of the war were also slowly converging in the sky, and it was clear that the RAF would need as many of these beautiful aircraft as possible.
The Spitfire's "brilliant moments" came during relentless air battles during the Battle of Britain, where in four months of fighting for air supremacy over southern England, it forever gained the reputation of an iconic machine. The Fighter Command made full use of the Spitfires alongside the larger Hawker Hurricanes and successfully thwarted the Luftwaffe's attempt to clear British aircraft from the sky. Above all, however, it averted the imminent threat of a German invasion. After the Battle of Britain was over and the RAF members had some time to rest and replenish their supplies, they were ready to launch an offensive, launch raids across the English Channel aimed at random targets, and try to lure the Luftwaffe back into battle.
The Spitfire also boasts the fact that it is the only Allied aircraft that has been continuously manufactured throughout World War II and is also constantly being improved to remain at the forefront of military aviation technology. Unfortunately for the RAF, the main opponent of its flagship, the Messerschmitt Bf109, was also constantly modified and improved. It was therefore not long before the Spitfires collided with the latest variant of this capable aircraft, the Bf 109F, during their raids on northern France. The sleek and very powerful Bf 109 ‘Friedrich’ more than matched the Spitfires of the time, so even though the RAF had an important development program already planned, the situation called for an immediate solution.
The resulting Spitfire Mk.V became perhaps the most efficient "emergency" aircraft the RAF has ever deployed. He was able to combine the higher performance of the Rolls Royce Merlin 45 engine with the original Mk.I / II kite and a number of improvements that were already prepared for the upcoming future version of the Mk.III, and the latest Luftwaffe machine suddenly ceased to be enough in mutual battles. Thanks to the higher production capacity supported by the new factory in Castle Bromwich, these aircraft were produced at an incredible pace, until this temporary variant of the Spitfire became the most produced version with almost 6,500 pieces. Eventually, she penetrated all war fronts and fought not only in her home territory to defend her homeland, but also over the North African deserts or jungles of the Far East.
The creation of the "universal wing" type C meant in a way another design triumph, as it not only allowed the aircraft to be equipped with several different configurations of weapons, but also reduced the complexity and time required for production. In addition, it strengthened the chassis, the main part of which was tilted a little more forward, and thus made it a little easier for the pilots, the infamous difficult control of the Spitfire on the ground.
To maintain the life of the Spitfire's engine even in hot and dusty air bases, some of them have been fitted with a Vokes air filter. Such a pendant in the front under the propeller may not have benefited twice the aesthetic qualities of the aircraft, and even increased aerodynamic drag, which removed from a top speed of about 30 km / h, but it is clear evidence that out of a total of more than 20,000 manufactured Spitfires were deployed. into environments that were never originally anticipated, thus furthering the lasting legacy of this magnificent aircraft.
