The North American P-51 Mustang is considered by many to be one of the most famous American fighters of World War II. The RAF version had a Rolls Royce Merlin engine installed. The long range and superior firepower of the P-51D made it an excellent escort aircraft, capable of protecting bombers all the way to Berlin and back. The P-51 is recorded as the highest rated Allied fighter of the war with 4,950 enemy aircraft destroyed. In 1948, the type designation for the Mustang changed to the F-51D and it continued in USAF and RAAF service as a ground attack aircraft during the Korean War.
