Template information:
At the end of 1967, the second generation of the Volkswagen Type 2 (T2) was introduced. It was built in West Germany until 1979. Models before 1971 are often called T2a (or "Early Bay"), while models after 1972 are called T2b (or "Late Bay").
This second-generation Type 2 lost its distinctive split windshield and was slightly larger and significantly heavier than its predecessor. T2b was introduced in the form of gradual changes over three years. The first models included rounded bumpers including a step for use with the door open. In 1971, the Type 2 featured a new 1.6-liter engine with double intake ports on each cylinder head and had a DIN rating of 37 kW (50 hp). An important change came with the introduction of front disc brakes new wheels with brake vents and flatter wheel covers. Until 1972, the front indicators were set low on the bow rather than high on either side of the fresh air grille - which led to them being nicknamed "Low Lights". The most significant change in 1972 was a larger engine compartment for larger 1.7 to 2.0-liter Volkswagen Type 4 engines and a redesigned rear end that removed the removable rear apron and introduced larger late taillights.
