Since the end of the eighth century, Vikings from Scandinavia have regularly appeared in Great Britain and on the European mainland in their dragons during their conquests. These warships, well-suited to sea, about 20 meters (66 feet) long, had both ends rounded, allowing them to land or bounce off shore in any direction. The low draft, only 1.5 meters (5 feet), also allowed the Vikings to sail or row along land-based waterways and rivers and invade the area deep inland. With these fast (up to 20 knots) and very manageable warships, also known as "dragon ships" or "langskips", the Vikings dared to sail long distances, such as Iceland, Greenland or even North America, as proved by the archaeological excavations of the ancient settlements.
