Five complete orbital space shuttles were built, which completed a total of 135 missions from 1981 to 2011. They launched from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. Operational missions have launched numerous satellites, interplanetary probes and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), conducted scientific experiments in orbit, participated in the Shuttle-Mir program with Russia, and participated in the construction and maintenance of the International Space Station (ISS). The total mission time of the shuttle fleet was 1,323 days.

Space Shuttle components include an Orbiter Vehicle (OV) with three clustered Rocketdyne RS-25 main engines, a pair of solid-fuel renewable rocket boosters (SRBs), and an expendable external tank (ET) containing liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen.

"Moonraker" plays a central role in the eleventh James Bond film of the same name, in which spaceships are used by the industrialist Drax for a project that threatens all of humanity. A Drax Industries Moonraker on loan to the United Kingdom was hijacked mid-air by the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. The carrier is destroyed, but no shuttle debris has been found. M, the head of MI6, assigns James Bond, agent 007, to investigate.
