Messerschmitt Me 262
Nicknamed the Schwalbe (swallow) in fighter versions, or Sturmvogel in the role of fighter bomber, was the first operationally deployed jet fighter. Design work began before World War II, but problems with engines, metallurgy, and top-level interventions did not bring the aircraft into service with the Luftwaffe until mid-1944. The Me 262 was faster and more heavily armed than any Allied fighter, including the British Gloster Meteor. It was one of the most advanced WWII aircraft in operational service, and its roles included a light bomber, reconnaissance and experimental variants of night fighters.
Mustang P51B
In November 1942, the NAA carried out a similar conversion of one P-51A to an unarmed XP-51B. Equipped with a twelve-cylinder Packard V-1650-3 Merlin engine (Merlin 65) with Bendix-Stromberg fuel injection, which was built under license by Packard.
Since the summer of 1943, Mustangs with Merlin engines have been produced on production lines in Inglewood. In California, it was designated NA-102 (P-51B-1-NA) and in Dallas, Texas as NA-103 (P-51C-1-NT). They carried a total of four Browning M 2 12.7 mm machine guns in their wings. "Béčka" and "Céčka" bore the designation Mustang Mk.III in the RAF. Thanks to their range, the aircraft have been able to fly USAAF bombers over Berlin and back since March 1944.
