The V-1 was the first in a series of so-called "Weapon Vengeance" (V-Weapons or Vergeltungswaffen) deployed for the terrorist bombing of London. Due to limited range, thousands of V-1 missiles launched into England were fired from launchers along the French (Pas-de-Calais) and Dutch coasts.
The Wehrmacht first launched a V-1 against London on June 13, 1944, a week after the Allies had landed successfully in France (and at his call). At the top, more than a hundred V-1s were fired daily in the south east of England. The attacks stopped just a month before the end of the war in Europe, when the last launch site in the lowlands was crossed on March 29, 1945. As part of operations against the V-1, the British operated air defense arrangements, including anti-aircraft guns, cannon balloons and fighters, to capture the bombs before they reached their targets.
In 1944, a number of tests of this weapon were carried out in Tornium, Finland. According to several soldiers, a small "air" bomb with wings fell from a German plane. Another V-1 was launched, which flew over the lines of Finnish soldiers. The second bomb suddenly stopped the engine and fell sharply, exploding, leaving a crater about 20 to 30 meters wide. The V-1 flying bomb was referred to by Finnish soldiers as the "Flying Torpedo" due to its resemblance to the distance.
