Template information:
PT torpedo boats were used by the US Navy during World War II. PT stands for Patrol Torpedo. PT boats have achieved the greatest success, especially in the Pacific Ocean. The main task of these small and cheap vessels was to fight the enemy's surface vessels, but they were also used for other tasks, such as shelling targets on the coast.
One of the most famous boats of this type is the PT-109, which was commanded by the future US President John Fitzgerald Kennedy during the war. During the action in the Solomon Islands, the PT-109 on August 2, 1943 was rammed, halved and sunk by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri. Kennedy and his crew then had to hide without food for several days on the shores of the islands off New Georgia before they were rescued.
