Soviet command began the blockade of West Berlin in June 1948. Transport flights to resupply the population of approximately 2.2 million began shortly thereafter. For the so-called air bridge, Douglas C-54 airplanes were mostly used, which earned the grateful Berliners the nickname "raisin bombers". By the end of the blockade in 1949, the Allies managed to get about 2.1 million tons of supplies to West Berlin.
