The M1 Abrams tank of the third generation forms the backbone of the armored divisions of the US Army and Marine Corps. The Abrams is characterized by its heavy armor (among the heaviest combat vehicles in the world) and the adoption of a powerful multi-fuel turbine engine. Great attention was paid to the protection of the crew thanks to a separate and heavily protected ammunition store. Entering operational service in the early 1980s to replace the aging M-60, the M1 Abrams features a sophisticated fire control system and advanced armor. Initially armed with a 105mm cannon. later it was equipped with a more modern and powerful 120 mm smoothbore gun capable of using different types of shells. Abrams was widely used.
