Developed as an off-road racing counterpart, the Raptor is optimized for off-road use, with all-wheel drive, all-terrain tires and an improved suspension system. Together with the extended bumpers, the Raptor is visually distinguished by the feature of the radiator grille. Instead of Ford Blue Oval, the company is written in the grid as "FORD" (last used by Ford in 1983).

In a significant departure from its predecessor, the second-generation Raptor was not offered with a V8 engine, but instead used a second-generation 3.5 L EcoBoost V6 petrol engine. The detonated version of the engine used in the Ford GT, a 450 hp twin turbocharged engine, is also shared with the Lincoln Navigator. The 2017 Raptor marked the debut of the 10R80 10-speed automatic transmission, the first non-commercial vehicle to be equipped with a 10-speed transmission (of any type).
