USS Enterprise (CV-6) was the second American Yorktown-class aircraft carrier. She was the seventh ship of that name in US Navy service and was also known by the nickname Big E. She was commissioned in 1938 and, along with USS Saratoga and USS Ranger, survived World War II. The remaining five aircraft carriers built before the war were lost during it. She took part in many major operations and engagements during the fighting in the Pacific. Among other things, for example, Doolittle's raid, the Battle of Midway, she intervened in numerous engagements in connection with the struggle for Guadalcanal, including the battles of the Eastern Solomons and Santa Cruz. In the later phase of the war, for example, the battles in the Philippine Sea and at Leyte. From December 1944 she specialized in night air operations and her code was changed to CV(N)-6. She was damaged several times, and even though the Japanese declared her sunk three times, she was always saved and put into battle again after repairs.
During World War II, she received 20 battle stars, making her the most decorated ship of the US Navy. On 25 November 1945, she received the British Admiralty flag, becoming the first warship of a foreign navy to fly this flag since its introduction in the 16th century.
