A6M2b Type 0 Model 21
After the delivery of the 65th aircraft, another change was incorporated into the production lines, which introduced folding wingtips to fit onto aircraft carriers. The resulting Model 21 became one of the most produced versions at the start of the war. A distinctive feature was an improved range with a 520 L (140 US gal) wing tank and a 320 L (85 US gal) auxiliary tank. When the lines switched to updated models, Mitsubishi completed 740 Model 21s and another 800 Nakajimas. Two other versions of the Model 21 were produced in small numbers, the Nakajima-built A6M2-N "Rufe" floatplane (based on the Model 11 with a slightly modified tailplane) and the A6M2-K two-seat trainer, of which a total of 508 were built by Hitachi and Sasebo Naval Air Arsenal.
