Carabinieri formally Arma dei Carabinieri are the national gendarmerie from Italy, who primarily perform domestic police duties. It is one of the main Italian law enforcement agencies along with the Polizia di Stato and the Guardia di Finanza. As with the Guardia di Finanza, but unlike the Polizia di Stato, the Carabinieri are a military force. As the fourth branch of the Italian Armed Forces, it falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defense; for activities related to inland public order and security is functionally dependent on the Ministry of the Interior. In practice, there is a significant overlap between the powers of the Polizia di Stato and the Carabinieri, who are contacted on separate emergency telephone numbers. Unlike the Polizia di Stato, the Carabinieri are responsible for supervising the army and many members regularly take part in military missions abroad.
They were originally established as the police forces of the Kingdom of Sardinia, the forerunner of the Kingdom of Italy. During the process of unification of Italy, the Carabinieri were appointed the "first force" of the new national military organization. Although the Carabinieri helped suppress the opposition during Benito Mussolini's rule, they were also responsible for his downfall, and many troops were dissolved during World War II by Nazi Germany, leading to a large number of Carabinieri joining the Italian resistance movement.
In 2001, they were separated from the army and became a separate branch of the Italian Armed Forces. Carabinieri have police powers that can be exercised at any time and in any part of the country, and are always entitled to be assigned a weapon as personal equipment (Beretta 92 FS pistol).
Carabinieri are often referred to as "La Benemerita" (The Repiable or The Meritorious) because they are a credible and prestigious institution involved in criminal proceedings in Italy. The first official account of the use of this term referring to the Carabinieri dates to June 24, 1864.
