Boeing CH-47 Chinook is an American medium transport helicopter with a tandem arrangement of two main rotors. It is the direct successor of the well-known CH-46D Sea Knight type. The first prototype took off on September 21, 1961, and the first mass-produced helicopters were delivered in late 1965. With a top speed of 315 km/h, it was faster than modern multi-role and attack helicopters of the 1960s.

Strengthened version first with T55-GA-712, later T55-GA-714 engines capable of carrying or carrying heavy loads on three hooks located under the fuselage. In civilian versions, it is able to transport construction machines or 12-meter containers at a speed of 250 km/h. In infantry support missions, it was most often used to carry the M198 howitzer along with 30 rounds and an 11-man crew. The helicopter is equipped with modern avionics including a GPS receiver.

The CH-47D helicopter played a significant role during operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, transporting troops and supplies. During operations in Afghanistan, it was operated in the mountains at altitudes limiting the use of the US Army's Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk transport helicopter. Typically, the CH-47 is deployed in combat sorties alongside AH-64 Apache helicopters.

The helicopters used by the Royal Air Force Chinook HC.2 and Chinook HC.2A are equivalent to the CH-47D.
