Like all other TIE designs, this model comes from Sienar-Flottensysteme. The TIE Interceptor was created as a response to the Rebel Alliance's successful X-wing fighter. Compared to the standard TIE fighter, recognizable by the hexagonal solar wings on the sides, it offers higher speed and more firepower. The dagger-like wings give the nimble interceptor a striking appearance, but allow the pilot a much better view to the sides.

The spherical cockpit is similar to the standard TIE model, so pilots can quickly switch from one type to another without lengthy training. As usual, the central cockpit is connected by two arms with wings attached to the sides by solar cells. Since the Interceptor was developed quite late, a TIE interceptor with a squadron of 12 TIE fighters was usually used. Although initially harder to find in numbers, the Interceptor was one of the fastest space fighters in the Empire. Only Darths Vader's warriors surpassed him in this regard.
