The Yamaha YZF-R1, or simply R1, is a 998 cc (60.9 cu in) sports motorcycle manufactured by Yamaha. First released in 1998, it underwent major updates in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2015, 2018 and 2020.
Yamaha launched the YZF-R1 in 1998 after redesigning the Genesis engine. It created a more compact engine by raising the transmission input shaft and allowing the transmission output shaft to be located below it. Due to compaction, the engine was significantly shortened, which also made it possible to shorten the wheelbase and optimize the center of gravity. The swingarm could be extended without compromising the overall wheelbase, which was a short 1,385 mm. Four 40mm Keihin CV carburetors fed the engine. The R1 also featured a 41mm KYB upside-down front fork and 300mm semi-floating disc brakes. The dashboard was electronic, with a self-diagnosis system and a digital speed readout. The exhaust used Yamaha's Exhaust Ultimate Power Valve (EXUP) system, which controlled exhaust gas flow to maximize the engine's power output at all revs. Which resulted in a high power, high torque engine.
R1 from 1999 saw only minor changes apart from paintwork and graphics. Improvements included a redesigned shifter linkage and increased shifter shaft length. Reserve fuel tank capacity was reduced from 5.5 to 4.0 L, while total fuel tank capacity remained unchanged at 18 L. For the 1999 model year, Cycle World tests recorded a top speed of 170 mph (270 km/h).
