The Ford Mustang is a sports car produced by the Ford Motor Company. It was initially based on the Ford Falcon. Production of the car began on March 9, 1964 in Dearborn, Michigan and was presented to the public on April 17, 1964 in New York. It was the most successful Ford since the Model A. The name was designed by John Najjar after the North American P-51 Mustang. In the years 1967-1969, the top version of the Shelby Mustang GT 500 was produced.
Ford released the Cobra Jet 428 in the spring of 1968. The 1968 models received revised side scoops, steering wheel and gas covers. Side marker lights were also added that year, and cars built after January 1, 1968 included shoulder belts for both front seats on the coupe. The 1968 models also introduced a new 302 cu in (4.9 L) V8 engine, designed to meet federal emissions regulations.
