The Chevrolet Chevelle is a mid-size car that was produced by Chevrolet in three generations for the 1964 to 1978 model years.
The Chevelle SS 396 became a separate series in 1966 with serial numbers 13817 and 13867. The SS396 sports coupe and convertible used the same Malibu sports coupe. Engines included three 396 (6.5 L) V8s – 242 kW standard, 270 kW optional and 280 kW optional (the mid-hppower 396 was rated at 270 kW for 1966 and 260 kW thereafter). The SS 396 series lasted from 1966 to 1968 before being relegated to an option package in 1969. The 1966 and 1967 model years were the only two years of the 2-door sports coupe with its own styling number 17.
