John Morton's skillful driving in the early 1970s elevated the Datsun brand to a competitive competitor on the racetrack and earned him the admiration of fans around the world. Morton, behind the wheel of the #46 Datsun 510 built by Peter Brock and Brock Racing Enterprises (BRE), won back-to-back SCCA Trans Am 2.5-liter championships in 1971 and 1972. The 1971 race was considered a major upset and brought the car reputation as a "giant killer".
The Datsun 510 had a wonderful simple engine that gave really good power for displacement, it was a good handling car. The four-wheel independent suspension with chassis layout is very similar to the 2002 BMW, but was about half the size. The chassis could be made with minor modifications so that it could be handled perfectly. Moreover, it was relatively easy.
