In 2005, BMW introduced the R1200RT. The BMW R1200RT is a touring or sport touring motorcycle that was produced from 2005 to 2019 by BMW Motorrad as a replacement for the R1150RT. It features a 1,170 cc (71 cu in) flat-twin engine with a six-speed gearbox and shaft drive.
BMW Authority Vehicles produces factory-built versions of the R1200RT, including the authority-only 878cc R900RT, specifically for emergency service use, including police, paramedic, blood transfusion, fire and escort services. The Authorities variant is based on the standard R1200RT, but can be recognized by the addition of stainless steel crash bars (colloquially known as "crash bars") located around the front fairing and panniers, which are also often used to mount additional equipment such as sirens. Paint and upholstery schemes also reflect service usage, most commonly the black and white "panda paint" found on many patrol cars. The large flat side panels on the R1200RT-P are a convenient and easy-to-see insignia location
