Information about the template:
The French village of Sainte-Mère-Église played a vital role in the overall strategic plan of "Overlord," the codename that denoted the Allied landings on the beaches of Normandy. It was actually identified on battle plan maps as an important road junction. The Germans could use it for quick counterattacks directed towards Utah and Omaha beaches. It was therefore strategic to immediately occupy the village with American airborne troops. In the early hours of June 6, 1944, paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st, two famous American airborne divisions, occupied the center of a small French town after intense fighting. The role played by American paratroopers has been defined and celebrated in many films from "The Longest Day" in the 1960s to more recent "warmovies".
