The Golf Mk1 received the type designation VW Type 17. Production began in March 1974 and sales officially began in May 1974. By this time, Giugiaro's rectangular headlights and wide taillights had given way to round headlights and much narrower taillights. It was a light car with a powerful 1.6 liter engine with mechanical injection and transmission for fast sprints, but it retained the practicality of the basic Golf. The 110 hp engine did not have too much work with the light Golf, its maximum speed was around 180 km/h. In 1979, the Golf GTi received a five-speed gearbox, after another two years it began to appear in the five-door version, and just before the launch of the next generation, a 1.8-liter engine with a capacity of 112 hp was also offered.
