The Golf Mk1 received the VW Type 17. Production began in March 1974 and sales officially began in May 1974. By this time, the rectangular headlights and wide Giugiaro taillights had retreated around the round headlights and much narrower taillights. It was a light car with a powerful 1.6-liter engine with mechanical injection and transmission for fast sprints, but which retained the practicality of the original Golf. The 110-horsepower engine didn't have much work with the lightweight Golf, its top speed was around 180 km / h. In 1979, the Golf GTi received a five-speed transmission, after another two years it began to appear in the offer in a five-door variant, and just before the next generation was introduced, a 1.8-liter engine with 112 horsepower was added.
