In 1964, the E-Type received several important upgrades, including a 4.2-liter version of the famous XK engine. The newer model produced 255 horsepower at 5,400 rpm compared to 5,500. The cooling system was redesigned to maintain the overall size of the engine. Exterior 4.2 is characterized by single-sided cast exhaust pipes. Other improvements include a new alternator-generator and an electric cooling fan for the radiator. The interior also redesigned the seats and removed aluminum panels in the center console, radio, alternative gear ratios, chrome wires, tinted glass and white-walled tires.
