The company was founded in 1965. The founders were Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. Their first joint work was the racing engine for Manfred Schiek's Mercedes-Benz 300 SE. The cooperation worked and AMG was established in Burgstall 2 years later. The letters A and M are the initials of the surname and G means Grossaspach (birthplace of Aufrecht).
In 1986, the SL 500 received a standard cylinder head model with Porsche technology. The original 16 valves were replaced by 32. Power 340 hp, torque 460 Nm and speed 258 km / h.
