Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was produced from 1954 to 1963. First as a coupe from 1954 to 1957 with gullwing doors Mercedes-Benz introduced the 300 SL in February 1954 at the New York International Auto Show. 300 refers to an engine displacement of 300 centimeters or more, specifically 2,996 cm 3 (182.8 cu in). SL stands for "super-light" in German (and refers to light tubular frame construction).
300 SL has direct fuel injection instead of two carburetors. The coupe got a straight-six engine with 240 horsepower (179 kW). To install the engine in a flat car, the engine was tilted 50 degrees to the left or to the driver's side.
